Languages and courses

The Language Centre offers teaching in 12 languages during the academic year 2011-2012. Language courses organised by the Language Centre are open to international (degree and exchange) students of the University of Turku. Please note that in many courses teaching is given in Finnish, and therefore sufficient Finnish skills are required. However, in the case of following languages some of the courses are taught in English:

  • Chinese, English, Finnish for Foreigners, Japanese (degree students only!) and Turkish.

Also, most of the more advanced classes are taught in the target language, thus students with sufficient knowledge of the language may participate in those courses. There are such courses in the following languages:

  • French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

The description of the course in the study guide is usually in the language which is mainly used in the course. You can verify the language of instruction by clicking on the language and course you would like to take and see which languages are mentioned after the headline "Opetuskieli". In the event that more than one language is mentioned and you are not sure whether or not you will be able to follow the instruction you can consult the teacher of the class.

Please note that for certain language courses it is necessary to sign up beforehand.

For detailed information about signing up, please see the course descriptions.

International students of other universities and other outside students must apply for the right to participate in the language courses. They can be admitted to courses only if resources and facilities allow. For more information, please see under Participation in Courses.

Please note: It is NOT possible for outside students to apply for the following courses:

Finnish for Foreigners:

  • Beginners courses I & II
  • Intensive Beginners Course
  • Survival Course

Japanese:

  • It is not possible for other than official degree students of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi or Turku School of Economics to participate in any of the Japanese courses.
